Boys Hockey Drop Opener to DC Everest

On Tuesday, November 21st 2017, the Northland Pines Boys Hockey Team opened their season at home versus the D.C. Everest Evergreens. The starters for this game were Jack Rhode, Andrew Rothmeier, Gunnar Schiffmann, Sammy Spencer, Kevin John, and Ethan Polich in the goal.

Pines boys started the game and came out very aggressive. They received two penalties throughout the period for high sticking (Harmon Marien) and interference (Sammy Spencer), although their penalties didn’t affect their gameplay. Both teams penalties were results of aggressive play.

The D.C. Everest team also earned themselves two penalties both for slashing (J.J. Berdal & Ty Tretter). Pines scored a goal; however, due to the fact of a high sticking call, the goal was called off. The Evergreens stood their ground and the game stayed even, ending the period scoreless.

Early in the second period, Pines tallied a goal with 12:50 left in the period. The goal was scored on a power play by #28, Andrew Rothmeier, assisted by #7, Brady Snedden and #3, Lochlan Siegmeier. Penalties in the second period continued to grow as Pines received four and the Evergreens received three. The Pines power play and penalty kill were strong and fluent, allowing them to score on the powerplay and defend the Evergreens during the penalty kill.

Pines penalties consisted of roughing, hooking (Marien), slashing (Rothmeier), and tripping (Spencer). The Evergreens earned a major for boarding (Dylan Buttner), interference (Berdal), and two many men on the ice (Served by Ben Peloquin). Throughout the rest of the period, both teams stayed strong in order to end the period, 1-0 with Pines in the lead.

At the start of the third period, D.C. Everest found the back of the net, scoring a goal on a power play 39 seconds into the final period. The frustration for Pines increased as the score was now 1-1. Pines was able to capitalize on one opportunity, scoring another goal to bring the score to 2-1.

The penalties in the third period became excessive for Pines, resulting in excellent scoring opportunities for the Evergreens, who took advantage and scored three more goals, one on an open net and two on power plays, winning the game 4-2.

The Northland Pines Boys Hockey Team plays again on Thursday, November 30th 2017 on the road against the Tomahawk Hatchets @ 7:00 pm.
